Locally Managed Marine Area
A Locally Managed Marine Area was established around Moturiki in 2000 to protect coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests. While destructive fishing methods are prohibited throughout the LMMA, there are three no-take MPAs where all fishing is prohibited. These areas foster coral farms that serve as an alternate source of livelihood from fishing for locals.
